Can tree-shifters be sexy? Hell, yes!
I’m going to
come clean about it. Phin, the hero of my new story Gifts from the Tree, is a
tree-shifter. He is, to be fair, a tree-shifter with a difference, who spends
his days masquerading as a university lecturer … and I’d better not give away
too much more, as that would ruin the story.
This isn’t
the first time I’ve written about a tree-shifter. Although I’ve never had one
as a main character before, The Green Man, a sylvan shifter, is a significant
character in two of my Greenwood books, Bound for
the Forest and Lord
of the Forest (and he even gets some sexy action in the first!) I’m kind of
nervous about introducing Phin to the world, however, because popular as
shifters are in general, trees certainly aren’t as fashionable as wolves and
panthers. Indeed, I’ve had people say to me that trees a) aren’t sexy and b)
are just too different from human beings for the whole shifter thing to work.
These are
all valid opinions, but I disagree. Of course it can work! Trees are beautiful,
vibrant, living creatures, which are as variable as human beings. They can be
young and sprightly, sturdy and wise, smooth and sensuous to touch, or craggy
and rough. Yes, it takes a leap of imagination to give a tree a personality and
a mind, but that’s what paranormal fiction is for, right? And let’s face it, us
humans owe a lot to trees. They produce the very air we breathe.
So while
they might not be everyone’s cup of tea, I hope that some of you will make the
leap of faith and give my sexy Celtic tree-shifter a try.
